This book demonstrates that silence is eloquent, powerful, beautiful and even dangerous. It surrounds and permeates our daily lives. Drawing on a wide range of cross-cultural, literary and historical sources, the author explores the uses and abuses of silence. He explains how silence is not associated with solitude alone but has a much broader value within society. The main themes of The Power of Silence are positive and negative uses of silence, and the various ways in which silence has been understood culturally, socially and spiritually. The book's objectives are to equip people with a better appreciation of the value of silence and to enable them to explore its benefits and uses more easily for themselves.

Gesture is integral to human language. Its function within human communication is as much goal-directed, and subsequently as communicative, as is speech. Indeed, gesture and speech share the same cognitive, psychological and physiological roots. Although the study of gesture has reached maturity as a branch of scholarship which endorses a multidisciplinary approach to communication, and is now integral to many of the sciences (psychology, psycholinguistics and ethnology, among others), little attention has been paid in recent years to the phenomena involved - the communicative function of gest

Proceeding from 22 authors assigned 22 different concepts, the book provides an overview of the essential present-day knowledge on linguistic interaction analysis. The authors selected include not only linguists (Bühler, Benveniste, etc.) but also major sociologists (Weber, Sacks, etc.), cultural theoreticians (e.g. Volosinov), and language philosophers (Wittgenstein, Austin, etc.). These are supplemented by more recent authors of rank (e.g. Bourdieu, Luckmann, Hymes, Geertz). Despite the interdisciplinary approach, the general orientation remains squarely linguistic. The spectrum of key concepts includes such terms as action, speech act, culture, intertextuality, subjectivity, performance, genre, etc.

A book about how people convey information about themselves and receive information from other people through their behaviour, posture, gestures, facial expressions and tone of voice. Druckman reviews what has been learned about four nonverbal communication channels -- para-language, facial expressions, kinesics, and visual communications. In Part Two he uses a case study to illustrate findings on personal distance, and reports on new research. A final chapter presents a framework that distinguishes situations by their structures: a first step toward linking nonverbal behaviours with their contexts. The act of questioning is the primary speech interaction between an institutional speaker and someone outside the institution. These roles dictate their language practices. ""Why Do You Ask?"" is the first collected volume to focus solely on the question/answer process, drawing on a range of methodological approaches like Conversational Analysis, Discourse Analysis, Discursive Psychology, and Sociolinguistics-and using as data not just medical, legal, and educational environments, but also less-studied institutions like telephone call centers, broadcast journalism (i.e. talk show interviews),
